Succédant à de grands artistes auxquels avait été confiée la réalisation du Pavillon (Gerhard Richter, Joseph Beuys, Anselm Kiefer, Sigmar Polke, Martin Kippenberger...), Anne Imhof - proche des univers de la performance, du théâtre, de la danse - “s’attaque à la brutalité de notre époque avec un réalisme âpre”

Dans le sillage de ses pièces précédentes : Angst (2016, Kunsthalle Basel ; Hamburger Bahnhof, Berlin), Deal (2015, Moma PS1, New York ; Palais de Tokyo, Paris), Anne Imhof (née en 1978) – lauréate du Lion d’Or décerné le 13 mai dernier (auquel s’ajoute l’Absolut Art Award remis la veille) – convoque les corps, le geste dans sa plus large portée, y compris l’insignifiance, pour le hisser au rang d’objet d’art à l’exploration sans limites. Poussés à bout, ils glissent, rampent, se meuvent imperceptiblement, se figent. Regards si pleins de vide, de terreur, de densité, tout à tour. Réagissant aux consignes adressées par l’artiste sous forme de texto, ils incarnent et fixent une ère nouvelle, dans la gravité du temps actuel. Chair à canon d’hors-beauté, 5 heures par jour, la Biennale durant, ils (se) donnent à voir et à réfléchir. La densité de l’expérience pour les visiteurs vaut certainement l’attente assurée en rangs serrés devant les murs de verre du Pavillon de l’Allemagne.
